New house
The owners wanted to make good use of the winter sun for their new house at their newly-established vineyard.
They anticipated having space for both themselves and out-of-town friends or bed and breakfast guests. The house ’bananas’ about the entrance/porte cochere, with the east wing containing living and their bedroom, and the west wing visitors’ breakfast room and kitchen/dining.
Facing north, the paved areas in the gallery that connects these spaces absorb heat in winter, and high-level windows vent in summer. This pivoted shape means the entire house opens out onto the pool area. An automatically retracting cover avoids the need for pool fencing.
